Vortex Mixing Technology Co., Limited announced today that their manufacturing processes for designing and customizing ribbon blenders have improved, allowing the company to meet, and possibly exceed, both American and European standards. The company already manufactures a variety of ribbon blenders and exports them across the world.

The ribbon blender is one of the most widely used powder mixers worldwide every day. It is a basic industrial mixing machine. Typical ribbon blenders, basically, consist of a trough-shaped shell with a semicircular bottom, fitted with a horizontal longitudinal shaft on which are mounted arms supporting a combination of ribbon blades, paddles or helical screws set at a fairly close clearance to the semicircular mixer body so that no layer of material remains on the bottom of the mixer. The most effective design of the ribbon layout is a double spiral, in which the outer ribbon moves the product in one direction and the inner ribbon moves it in the opposite direction. The ribbons rotate and move materials both radially and laterally to ensure thorough blends in short cycle times. Ribbon agitators are used for blends that will be between 30 and 70% of the rated capacity of the blender.

The following ribbon blender types are part of Vortex’s customized offerings, and are the main result of the improved quality and accuracy in manufacturing:

  • GMP Standard: GMP is the highest standard for mixers, which requires a Ra0.4 finish for material contact parts inside the mixer. Furthermore, the construction material of the mixer should be stainless steel 304 or 316L. Bolts and screws are not allowed inside, so a through shaft without flange is standard for a GMP ribbon blender. The seal part should also be split seal which can be maintained easily to change packing seal. The key point is there must be no dead space for contamination.
  • Jacket Type: For some typical processed material, the customer needs a cooling or heating jacket to be combined with mixing. For example, a cooling jacket is normally used in the plastic powder industry, while a heating jacket is normally used for drying. Due to it being a more complex than ordinary type mixer, the engineer will get detailed information about jacket use including pressure, working medium, and temperature.
  • Vacuum Type: Normally speaking, vacuum and drying should always be together in the mixer because the vapor shall need to be sucked out in order to get better and fast drying result. All construction parts on this ribbon mixer are stronger than standard type and the cover of the mixer shall be cone type in order to bear vacuum pressure.
  • Choppers Type: A ribbon blender is not a good mixer for shear mixing, but choppers can be added as option in order to break agglomeration. When customer adds liquid spraying onto powder, the product is easily gets blocked. So, it needs chopper blades to shear caking.

Other options for ribbon mixers include various designs of discharge valves, ribbons, an explosion-proof motor, and other customized designs.
