How is electrical energy produced? According to an article at the Science Daily website, electricity generation is the first process in the delivery of electricity to consumers. It typically takes places in a power plant. Some fuel source, such as coal, oil, natural gas or nuclear energy produce heat. The heat is used to boil water to create steam. The steam under high pressure is used to spin a turbine. The spinning turbine interacts with a system of magnets to produce electricity. The electricity is transmitted as moving electrons through a series of wires to homes and business.
In his book “Inside the Giant Electric Machine” (published by Trafford Publishing), author John Guiliano, with 16 years experience in working at Philadelphia Electric Company, takes the readers into a fictional account of the world of electric generation. Guiliano introduces interesting characters that will bring about the realities of working inside an electric company. The book also shares how the importance of team work can solve inevitable problems.
The very colorful crew methodically disassembles, cleans, inspects, replaces parts, reassembles and restores the main generator back to maximum efficiency for the success of the giant electric machine. The crew works very well together, understanding the importance of working safely, asking questions, following procedures and getting the work done right the first time. The crew also understands the importance of a safe, reliable source of electricity to be provided to all homes and businesses across America and the world.
“Inside the Giant Electric Machine” is a series of fictional books with “The Main Generator” as the third and latest installment, following “The Giant Water Cooling Pump” and “The Giant Emergency Diesel Generator,” respectively. It is based on realities of electricity generation. “(This series of books) maybe a little different approach to help others learn and my way to share,” Guiliano shares.
