NORMAL, Ill., Oct. 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Living up to their mission to 'best serve the needs of our present and future customers,' United Electric, a Louisville, KY based contractor that specializes in industrial automotive electrical installations throughout North America, and Zeller Electric, a Goodfield, IL based contractor that specializes in custom electrical solutions, recently assisted in the production of the first electric truck, installing the trim and final lines at the plant where the Rivian R1T was assembled.
Designs for an electric vehicle have been in the works for the past decade, starting out as a sports car then moving to a pickup truck before it caught traction and became the Rivian R1T. Their goal was to invent a vehicle that was both environmentally friendly as well as able to get out and off-road. Big on the outdoors and reducing environmental impact, Rivian's slogan is, 'Keep the World Adventurous Forever.' Purchasing a defunct Mitsubishi plant in Normal, Illinois, Rivian completely gutted and refitted the property.
Coming full circle, the Zeller/United team's contribution to the assembly of the Rivian R1T comes back to the plant, where they installed the electrical portion of the conveyance system and general assembly — specifically trim one, two, and three conveyor lines. Facing challenges with shipping delays due to Covid-19, they overcame these obstacles by adding a second shift and working seven days a week, starting in January and continuing through March.
The installation team's favorite feature is the wiring they did on the final line. "It's front and center when you walk in the door, where the public enters when they have tours. Every time there's a picture of the plant, it's of the final line," says the team's Project Manager, Scott Walsh. "We did the wiring on the area of the plant that gets the most focus, the most media attention. The final line is the showpiece of the plant."
Sharing similar values, Rivian, United Electric, and Zeller Electric are all big on delivering quality products. "Quality is the biggest one," says Scott Walsh. Expecting continued growth in the automotive construction industry as big manufacturers commit to making multiple models of electric vehicles, they anticipate an increase in the market share in terms of electric vehicles sold, as well as the electrical infrastructure necessary for the additional charging needs.
