MGM Contractor, MD Occupational Safety and Health Sign Safety Agreement
Oxon Hill, MD (PRWEB) September 02, 2015 -- Officials from Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) and Whiting-Turner signed a safety agreement pledging 100 percent safety awareness and compliance at the site of the $1.2 billion resort and casino set to open in the latter half of 2016.
The MGM National Harbor project boasts a construction workforce of 1,000, currently including 40 members of Iron Workers Local 5 and 120 members from Local 201. Local 5 leaders expect to employ at least 200 ironworkers by the end of the project.
“We’re glad to be here! This puts a lot of our ironworkers to work,” says Iron Workers Local 5 Business Agent Aaron Bast. “We are 100 percent safe on this job, and we’re excited looking forward to a great partnership with MGM.”
“Our ironworkers are the best in the world,” says Iron Workers General President Eric Dean. “They go to work every day committed to safety – they want everyone working on the jobsite to get home to friends and family each day.”
The safety agreement was signed by Maryland Commissioner of the Division of Labor and Licensing and Regulation Tom Meighan and Whiting-Turner’s Safety Director Eric Hanson.
Described by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan as “one of the most important economic development projects in Maryland history,” Local 5 and Local 201 members are dedicated to completing this project with 100 percent safety compliance, zero safety incidents, on time and under budget.
The MGM National Harbor construction is well underway. The site has already had soil removed, foundation piles installed, concrete poured and steel erected for the 3,000-seat theater, among other construction milestones. Currently, there are 12 cranes and 1,000 workers working nearly around the clock to complete the project. Construction on the project began earlier this year.
Unlike Maryland’s existing five casinos, the MGM National Harbor will be a “destination” resort featuring a 23-story, 308-room hotel tower, a 26,582-square-foot spa and salon, 12 restaurants and 18,259-square-feet of retail space, in addition to the casino and theater. MGM National Harbor predicts more than 3,000 permanent jobs by the end of the project.
