Addressing opioid prescribing...among those patients not using opioids has the greatest potential to reduce the number of new chronic opioid users and minimize unintended distribution of prescription opioids...
MONTCLAIR, N.J. (PRWEB) August 02, 2018
A new course track to be offered at PAINWeek 2018 will explore a range of topics in acute pain management. In The Role of Acute Care in the Opioid Epidemic, course presenter Chad Brummett, MD, will discuss Michigan OPEN—the Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network—an innovative approach to the opioid epidemic launched in the state of Michigan. The initiative focuses on reducing acute care prescribing (surgery, dentistry, emergency medicine, and trauma) through the identification and dissemination of best practices in acute care opioid prescribing to providers around the state.
Dr. Brummett remarked, “Addressing opioid prescribing during the acute care period among those patients not using opioids has the greatest potential to reduce the number of new chronic opioid users and minimize unintended distribution of prescription opioids into communities.” He will also address the degree to which centralized pain is predictive of treatment success in his course The Impact of Centralized Pain on Acute and Chronic Pain Outcomes. The 2011 Survey Criteria for Fibromyalgia can be used as a surrogate of centralized pain to detect patients with fibromyalgia-like or centralized pain characteristics. Patients with higher fibromyalgia survey scores describe a more negative pain phenotype preoperatively, including more opioid use, higher pain scores, higher levels of anxiety and depression, and lower physical function.
Other course offerings in the Acute Pain track will include Emerging Trends in Acute Pain Management, a review of evidence based nonopioid medications and treatment modalities for acute pain, to be presented by Alexis LaPietra, DO. The role of antispasmodics in the management of various pain syndromes from muscle spasms, cramping, and hiccups, with insights on matching the symptom to the appropriate medication, will be discussed by Jessica Geiger-Hayes, PharmD, BCPS, CPE, in her course Relax, All Antispasmodics are the Same…Right? Finally, a panel of PAINWeek faculty including Robert L. Barkin, MBA, PharmD, FCP, DAPM; Rami Ben-Joseph, PhD; Joseph V. Pergolizzi, Jr, MD; and Robert B. Raffa, PhD, will lead The Dynamics of Managing Acute Postoperative Pain in the Current Opioid Sparing Environment, an examination of new options on the horizon for the management of moderate to severe in-hospital acute pain. The Acute Pain track will take place on Wednesday, September 5.
PAINWeek 2018 will feature a diverse curriculum in the following course concentrations: advanced practice practitioners, behavioral, integrative, and interventional pain management, chronic pain syndromes, medical/legal issues, neurology, pain and chemical dependency, physical therapy, palliative care, and pharmacotherapy. There will also be full-day programs presented by the American Pain Society, the American Society of Pain Educators, the American Headache Society, and the International Pelvic Pain Society.
