Dental patients need to be knowledgeable about dentistry before agreeing to a treatment plan.
Laguna Niguel, Calif. (PRWEB) August 09, 2013
After 36 years as a private practitioner, dentist and author James Pedersen decided to retire. He began working for a dental HMO company as a dental quality consultant, and what he saw surprised him. His humorous stories and assessments of the current dental industry are collected in his new book, “Dental Dilemma: My Experiences in the Dental HMO Field” (published by iUniverse).
“I practiced dentistry for 36 years and had the opportunity to visit over 1,000 dental offices and converse with dentists and their staffs,” explains Pedersen. “Dental patients need to be knowledgeable about dentistry before agreeing to a treatment plan.”
The book follows Pedersen as he meets dentists participating in his company’s HMO program. Through his encounters he shows the change in dentistry from a profession with high standards to a business where dentists are competitors, not colleagues. His stories are comical and provide an excellent outline of the current dental industry today.
An excerpt from “Dental Dilemma”:
“Dr O’Kelly walked me through the office, showing me his two dinghy operating rooms and a cluttered filthy lab. Then in another larger room, he showed me several up-right pianos in various stages of repair. This turned out to be his hobby. He was very proud of the pianos. He never once talked about dentistry. He definitely was a better piano restorer than a dentist. I’m thinking to myself, ‘Where am I? Am I crazy? What is this?’ Then Jerome said, ‘I have been receiving many DenCap patients, but after I examine them, they don’t come back.’ No kidding!”
