In his new nonfiction, “Doing Time Eight Hours a Day: Memoirs of a Correctional Officer” (published by iUniverse), author James R. Palmer gives an insider’s view of what happens in prison when the doors slam shut.

In 1996, Palmer went to work at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex, a medium security prison in LaGrange, Ky. “Doing Time Eight Hours a Day” chronicles the time he spent there and sheds light on day-to-day prison life.

“It reveals the daily events in the lives of officers and inmates,” Palmer says of his book. “It’s not about the glamour, but the ugly and the inhumane side of what transpires and how some folks deal with it.”

An excerpt from “Doing Time Eight Hours a Day”:

“But with all said and done, as we gathered outside the front doors, we still had to relate to each other what it was like that day, especially if we had any codes or signals. One thing we were all grateful and happy for we were all going home … safe. And we mostly had in the back of our minds the question, Was I firm—fair—consistent?”
