Dr. Janette Williams, DDS, now offers an alternative treatment for those who suffer from Sleep Apnea and snoring. Many physicians prescribe a CPAP machine as standard treatment. However, about 30% of patients, find is difficult to tolerate the mask on their face while sleeping. They also find they must adhere to certain sleep positions, regulate their sleep patterns and it often disturbs their bed partners.

With an oral appliance, called a Mandibular advancement device, the patient has a customized device that fits inside the mouth, pulling the lower jaw slightly forward and keeping the airway open. The tongue and soft tissues are kept stable and firm, allowing ample air to get in and keeps the patient from excessive snoring.

There are numerous benefits to the oral appliance versus the CPAP, including comfort and ease of adapting to the use, portable when traveling, silent, less obtrusive, easier to maintain and protects against teeth grinding.

“For many of my patients who come to me as a result of teeth grinding, that maybe a secondary issue. Their real problem may be sleep apnea: they grind their teeth due to the inability to breathe,” said Janette Williams. “The oral devices are convenient, less expensive to maintain, and last for many years. Plus they are much easier to transport when traveling.”

When considering an oral device over the CPAP, Dr. Janette Williams will assess the snoring and breathing patterns of each patient with a series of questions and a thorough review of any doctors’ reports if available. Patients should be aware that underlying physical changes, such as weight gain, day-time sleepiness, headaches and difficulty in falling asleep could all be a result of sleep apnea. Untreated, sleep apnea can affect your heart health, cause type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, acid reflux and more.
