Industry Analyst Jeff Kagan on Apple Selling 9 Million iPhones First Weekend
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 23, 2013 -- Apple sold 9 million iPhones during the first weekend, says Engadget, Sept 23.
Tech analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment.
“Congratulations to Apple on breaking their previous record selling 9 million total iPhone 5s and 5c devices during the first weekend, and winning 200 million device upgrades to iOS 7.” Says Principal analyst Jeff Kagan.
“While this is great first weekend news, it’s important to get a full understanding of what happened. Apple was concerned about the public relations of a soft first weekend, so they took some steps to strengthen the numbers. Traditionally users could pre-order devices. Not this year. This year anyone who wanted a new iPhone, must get into line. That bolstered the lines and strengthened opening weekend from a PR perspective.” Says Wireless analyst Kagan.
“200 million devices upgrading to the iOS 7 was also remarkable, however that is not the whole story. How many of the users actually like iOS 7 over iOS 6 they have grown used to? The problem is users cannot simply dial back to iOS 6 if they don’t like iOS 7. The question is how many customers are happier with iOS 7? That was not addressed in the Apple PR release.” Says Kagan.
“So while Apple had remarkable sales and upgrades, the next question is how many are happier and more satisfied?” Says Kagan.
“Either way, this was another stellar first weekend for Apple. So hats off to Apple! However it’s important to recognize there are signs that the smartphone marketplace is getting tougher each year that passes.” Says Kagan.
