The American frontier was a time of territorial conquest and discovery. The convergence of cultures and peoples that characterized this period would eventually give birth to the America that the world sees today. Out of the dynamism and tumult of this era, up and coming author Joel Carl crafts a powerful tale of survival, romance and dramatic adventure. “The Spook” is a riveting journey through one of the most exhilarating and transformative episodes in American history.

Set in Nebraska Territory during the 19th century, the novel is centered on J.D. Davis, a young inspector tasked with investigating a fraudulent 18-township survey in the vicinity of the Niobrara River. His investigation soon pits him against a devious mob, led by a notorious assassin known as “The Spook,” who would do anything to prevent their scam from being exposed. The already volatile situation becomes even more complex when Davis falls in love with Jennifer Halbot, a young widow with three children. In the midst of the turmoil, Davis must find the courage to fight not just for his life but for duty and his newfound love.

Carl, the compelling and evocative narrator, guides readers through violent gunfights, battles with Indians and the unforgettable conclusion to Davis’ odyssey through the American West. Heralding the arrival of a gifted new voice, “The Spook” captures both the sweep of history and the struggles and triumphs of the men and women tested by the vicissitudes of the time.
