According to the National Vietnam Veteran’s Foundation, 9 million people served in the military during the Vietnam War. Of the 2.7 million Americans who served, nearly 58,000 were killed. Author Joe Rhodes was one of the lucky ones who returned home alive.

Rhodes invites readers to experience the Vietnam conflict firsthand in his new book, “Fly It Home: Letters From Nam” (published by Trafford Publishing).

Rhodes served in Vietnam from August 1970 to August 1971, during which time he wrote numerous letters to his family. “Fly It Home” presents his letters in chronological order, which gives readers a chance to see how war had an effect on Rhodes and the many soldiers like him.

“This book describes my transformation from boy to soldier to man. It defines what the real meaning of family is to me,” Rhodes says.

An excerpt from “Fly It Home”:

“Thank you for having interest in my story, and I hope you will join me in a collective statement to the rest of the entire world . . . ‘Don’t tread on me. Don’t even think about it!’”
