John Hanger has served as the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection from 2008-2011; as Chair of the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, and Chair of the Pennsylvania Mine Safety Board. Mr. Hanger enacted new, gas drilling rules and increased the gas drilling staff from 88 to 202 positions in order to increase active oversight.
As the founding President of Citizens of Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture), Pennsylvania's leading public interest organization working to improve the environment and economy. As President during the years from 1998-2008, he played a central role in passing important legislation, including the $625 million Growing Greener environmental stewardship program, Pennsylvania's national leading net metering legislation, Pennsylvania's 2004 Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards Act and Act 70 that required the writing of Pennsylvania's Climate Action Plan completed in 2009.
Mr. Hanger also served as Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission from 1993 to 1998. He was the architect of Pennsylvania's law that ended electric monopolies and allowed consumers to choose their electric generation suppliers or add renewable energy.
