The new book, “Elyse and Me: Conversations between a Child and God about Dying” (published by Balboa Press), by John R. Hanson deals with issues that surround children discovering they have a life-threatening illness. Hanson was inspired by his volunteer work in hospices and work as a hospice chaplain.
“Elyse and Me” follows a nine-year-old girl named Elyse on her journey coming to terms with her cancer diagnosis. She is frightened and angry because of the unknown aspect of the afterlife. But, when God appears to her, they become friends and she no longer fears dying.
Hanson hopes that this story will be relatable for children with terminal illnesses because not only does it deal with the fear and anger associated with the cancer diagnoses, but because his story ultimately contains a hopeful message for those children about the afterlife.
An excerpt from “Elyse and Me”:
"Sweetie," said Mom, "the doctor told us that the chemo's not working anymore, and there's no other kind of chemo to give you." [Her mom and dad were crying.] It was hard for Elyse to see her parents so sad. She felt bad for them. She also knew that all the things that Me had told her about his world were true. She could even feel Me in her heart at that moment. It felt good and peaceful. Elyse was no longer afraid to die.
