These flash cards were born out of a love of reading, and that’s why I’m excited to be part of this year’s Tucson Festival of Books.

Kids and parents will get an inside look behind the making of Desert Dwellers Flash Cards, with slides about what the process entailed - from concepts to paintings to the finished animal flash cards. Artist, Julie Rustad, will also be signing copies and handing out giveaways, at Booths #464 and #313.

Julie Rustad's agenda at Tucson Festival of Books is as follows:

Saturday March 15th
10:30 am – 11 am: Desert Dwellers Trivia in Julie Originals Booth #464
12 pm - 1pm: Signing Desert Dwellers Flash Cards in the Local First Arizona Booth #313
3 pm – 3:30 pm: Inside look at creating the Desert Dwellers Flash Cards in Julie Originals Booth #464

Sunday March 16th
9:30 am -11:30 am: Signing Flash Cards in the Author Pavilion, Children's Area
3 pm – 3:45 pm: Coloring with artist Julie Rustad in Julie originals Booth #464
'Desert Dwellers: Southwest Animals from A-Z', a set of colorful flash cards with facts and stories about desert critters, encourage early reading whilst offering a southwestern twist on traditional alphabet books.

Julie developed them while her son Syver was a toddler. They feature Julie’s original paintings of southwest critters, from Anna's Hummingbird through to the Zebra-Tailed Lizard.

Now the award-winning flash cards, priced at $20 each (with shipping), are sold in 18 stores around Arizona. Julie, who also runs her own graphic design firm, 24-7 Creative Solutions, uses the flash cards in schools and preschools in Tucson to promote reading.

“These flash cards were born out of a love of reading, and that’s why I’m excited to be part of this year’s Tucson Festival of Books. Even though I make my living through computers and new technology, I love for my family to just get back to basics, like reading a good book or making art – something that doesn’t require batteries!” said Julie.
