The 1920s was an age marked by cultural, social and artistic dynamism. It was a time when resistance to social change could take violent forms. RAGTIME FOR THE ROCKIES, the new novel by Karl A. Lamb, captures both the sweep of this remarkable episode in history and the struggles and triumphs of people caught up in it.

The story follows the life and times of Owen and Ruby Mattison, characters inspired by the author’s own father and his first wife. They arrive in Platteville, Colorado, where Owen is starting out a career as an athletics coach and science teacher for the local high school and soon becomes a stringer for the regional newspaper. Ruby is a pianist and jazz fan whose clothes and bobbed hair are a testament to the triumph of flapper fashion. The young couple venture eagerly into their new life but they get more than they bargained for when Owen investigates the infamous Ku Klux Klan and they are challenged to take sides in growing conflicts.

A collision of remarkable characters, RAGTIME FOR THE ROCKIES is at once a story of love and life unfolding across the volatile backdrop of the roaring twenties and an exploration of the dynamics of society, culture and family.
