With the publication of his new mystery novel “The Death of Dr. Alekhine” (published by AuthorHouse) author Kevin F. X. Toon fulfills a lifelong dream to write and publish a novel.

In 1946, just after WWII, the body of Dr. Alexander Alekhine, world chess champion, is found in his – locked from the inside – hotel flat. Was it an accident, suicide or murder? If it’s the latter, as Inspector Colbert, a chess master himself, believes as he proceeds with his investigation, then how did it happen, who is responsible and what was their motive?

An excerpt “The Death of Dr. Alekhine”:

“While pausing at corners for a lacuna in traffic he observed people hunched over, hastening to their destinations, or waiting in clots for the bus to arrive, their faces heavy and lined with worry. Many still wore the clogged, wooden-soled shoes that became common after Germany confiscated the country’s leather for the Whermacht. They paced or fidgeted on benches, turned their coats against the intermittent blasts of rain, and occasionally exchanged a cigarette or grim joke. An ancient man with one leg and one stump and one crutch made his rounds rattling a tin cup.”

A chess master himself, Toon has imbued his novel with layers of meaning. “Although it is written as a murder mystery/police procedural/historical novel,” he says, “the underlying theme is: how does a rational man deal with and live in an irrational world?”
