In candid detail, the co-authors share the harsh realities of Innocent being abducted by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army and forced to fight in a war, losing his father, and growing up enshrouded in fear, poverty and hunger. After a narrow escape from the rebel army, Innocent shares the difficult journey toward healing and his growing desire to help others.
The narrative offers a display of the resilience of the human spirit, revealing Innocent’s perseverance as he accesses education, develops leadership skills and continually turns hardship into fuel for positive change. Regardless of circumstance, Innocent exhibits the courage and strength to provide for his family and push through many challenges, ultimately earning a role with a non-governmental organization supporting countless children in northern Uganda facing much of the same hardship.
In the prologue, McLaughlin shares his story of crossing paths with Innocent in Uganda and closes the book with a meaningful reflection and inspiring call to action for the reader.
An excerpt from “Innocent”:
This particular day, however, the camp was overtaken with celebration. We had the rare opportunity to bathe ourselves and put on our brand new uniforms in preparation for the party. During the general assembly, an announcement was made that gun shots would be fired later in the day as a welcome for our “father,” Commander in Chief Joseph Kony. The man we had been told to revere, trust and fear was to grace us with a personal visit.
