Know Your 'Blueprint' and Use it to Design Your Next Chapter
The calling at any stage in life… There are times when you arrive at an important juncture and ask yourself 'what do I REALLY want to do next?' At that moment you could wait for an intervention or forge ahead.
JERSEY CITY, N.J., March 6, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Last year I arrived at that intersection and thought hard about how to transition from a successful corporate career in HR to….well, something very different.
Enter my passion for interior design and style! As zany as it sounded, I reflected on how for many years I helped family and friends design and decorate their homes. Perhaps it was time to make it official.
First things first – I had to be clear about the emotions that were driving me coupled with the realities of the decision. I realized it was about leveraging and building on my strengths and passion – this was about Career Building! Not necessarily a STOP and a START.
So, what helped me?
Using my past to take me forward…
I thought about the countless times I facilitated career discussions in my HR roles; and now it was time to dust off the notes and begin my introspective search. It was an opportunity to look at the knowledge, skills and experiences that could help me establish my own business. My new brand! How exciting and yet daunting! And yes, I was nervous about steering away from the corporate landscape, where I spent nearly three decades.
Taking stock of my strengths and vulnerabilities
Establishing a vision and planning, communication, leading global teams, creativity, stakeholder management, problem solving, courage, intuition, learning on the fly…these are my strengths.
We often don't give ourselves enough credit, or fully appreciate our achievements that can create our 'blueprint'. Taking stock of my strengths and understanding where I needed guidance was a pivotal moment in establishing my business plan…'my blueprint'. Being resourceful is super important…ESPECIALLY when you start your own business.
Where to from here?
Keeping it simple…
I set up the following structure to my business plan;
- Why (the passion and purpose)?
- How, what and when (actions, deliverables and timeline)?
- Who could I turn to? What other resources did I have (assets)?
- Measures of success (am I winning)?
Who's got my back?
Always have your network at hand. Keep those who bring you positive energy on speed dial! And it's just as important to have honest and trustworthy friends who will tell you the way it is and have your best interest in mind. Oh, and remember to celebrate wins (as small as they might seem)!
From climbing the corporate ladder to taking a leap of faith!
All the learnings, highs and lows have brought me to this place - a platform that will give me the confidence and courage to navigate what lies ahead. I continue to be inspired by many similar stories of small business owners, who followed their passion, created their 'blueprint', took risks and wrote their own success stories. Yes, there will be many challenges ahead…and so too the opportunities. Adios! to designing talent strategies; and Yes! to creating home staging plans and interior design inspirations that will bring new life to homes!
I am writing the second phase of my career story and living it through my own lens. That's what makes this journey so empowering, enlightening and rewarding.
A very special thanks to all who have inspired me.
