West Michigan industrial machinery expert and design powerhouse Koops, Inc. has earned the honor of winning the first annual AME Innovate Award. Koops' entry emerged from a field of five submissions by West Michigan industrial tech companies to win the debut award at Advanced Machinery Expo, held in Hudsonville on August 13, 2015.

Koops takes the award home thanks to its custom design and build of a fully automated machine that tests, sorts, labels, folds, bags and boxes Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Systems. The Koops' machine handles multiple versions of these DVT systems, with an integrated array of custom-tooled machinery inside a controlled clean room enclosure. Manually fed, the machine's several stages of coordinated tasks involve multiple robots, conveyors, 3-D vision systems, and a six-station turntable fitted with integrated leak testers, among other components. At capacity, the Koops machine can test, sort, label, fold, bag and box one DVT system every six seconds.

Jacob Straus, business development lead at Koops, Inc., says that the 2015 AME Innovate Award has made the entire Koops team proud. "We leverage the engineering expertise and creative genius of our entire team to not only make a project work, but work well. The more we can align and integrate new technologies into processes like the DVT machine, the more efficient those processes become. This allows our clients to use these technologies to expand their horizons."

The other four submissions in the 2015 AME Innovate competition applied automated processing to spring inspection, yogurt cup manufacturing, plastic injection, and helicopter component production and inspection.
