KORT Physical Therapy Opens New Summit Wellness Clinic & Expands POWR Program to Multiple Locations
Louisville, Kentucky (PRWEB) February 06, 2014 -- KORT's POWR Program helps patient get back in the game. Obesity in both adults and children has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Obesity increases your risk for type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis of the weight bearing joints(knees, hips, and low back) says Dr. Emily Green, PT, DPT, OCS, program director of the KORT POWR Program and clinic director at KORT’s newest facility Summit Wellness and PT. “In addition to multiple health concerns, those extra pounds keep you from living your best, most active life and preventing you from doing the things you love,” said Green.
Getting Back in the Game
In June 2012, Charlie Oberhausen ruptured a tendon in his foot while refereeing a high school basketball game, making walking a challenge and running impossible. Sidelined from the game he loves, Oberhausen went to KORT in February 2013 to rehabilitate his foot. While there, he was introduced to the POWR weight loss program. Now, less than a year later, he is down 64 pounds and it at his ideal body weight.
“The program helped me identify what I was eating and helped with portion control. Emily worked with me on what I should be eating and making sure I was getting the proper nutrition. We also talked about exercise and tracked it. Now, I am in much better shape. I feel so much better and can do what I really want to do, like referring basketball games. I didn’t realize how much I loved it until I couldn’t do it. I really missed the game and am so glad to be refereeing this season,” said Oberhausen.
Not a Diet
Like Charlie, millions of us will resolve to lose those extra pounds by starting a diet. The Boston Medical Center found that nearly 45 million Americans diet each year and spend $33 billion on weight-loss products in their pursuit of a better body. While a fitter figure is desired for optimal health, how one goes about it is just as important as the end result.
KORT has developed the Personalized Orthopedic Weight Reduction (POWR) program as a healthy and effective way to lose weight while improving overall health and fitness. Unlike a diet, this medically-based program helps people achieve and maintain their healthiest weight through a customized dietary, lifestyle and fitness program monitored by a trained clinician.
Why POWR Works
“The POWR program doesn’t just focus on reducing caloric intake, it’s also about educating patients on how to make better food choices and giving them the tools to improve their eating habits for life. Many popular weight loss programs let dieters eat whatever they want in smaller portions. However, when they’ve reached their goal and stop the fad diet, they regain the weight back because their eating behaviors have not changed.” said Dr. Green.
“Clients in the POWR program are encouraged track their food choices and activity levels daily. They are also placed on an individualized exercise plan to best meet their goals. Both exercise and food logs are carefully monitored with metrics to ensure a healthy weight loss. Additionally, clients are being encouraged and educated along the way, so they can make permanent lifestyle changes to reach and maintain their long term weight loss goals. It is truly a passion of mine to help others lose weight and become more active in order to improve their health and wellness.” said Green.
