Kumon Math and Reading Center Touts the Merits of Supplemental Education
Greenville, SC (PRWEB) February 05, 2016 -- “Programs that supplement the student's normal school day can change the academic path of that child significantly. The student's ability to complete their school work is greatly enhanced by strengthening math, reading, writing and work skills,” said Betsy Holbrook, owner and instructor at Kumon Math and Reading Center of Greenville. “A carefully chosen program offers students the opportunity to become confident, inquisitive thinkers and learners, as well as the following three benefits.”
No. 1: Learning at an individual pace. “In schools, the whole class basically travels at the same academic speed according to age and grade,” said Holbrook, a former hospital/research microbiologist. “The teacher must attempt to address the needs of 20 to 30 children with a vast range of knowledge, experience and ability.”
Conversely, in an after-school program students are approached as individuals. Each child begins at the level appropriate for their current academic skill base. They then set the pace for their progression, building solid foundations through every phase. Students can move ahead quickly in these programs, gaining several grade levels in one school year. Those students who have not learned as quickly as others, and therefore have gaps in their knowledge base, can quickly fill in these gaps. This allows the lagging student to catch up to the grade level of their peers. Students who learn quickly move ahead of their grade level, and are placed in the higher learning tracks at school. This ensures a path to advanced and AP classes in high school, and admission to a larger and better choice of colleges and universities.
No. 2: Learning through practice. Practice is required to acquire mastery of any skill. Supplemental education programs allow students to master basic math and reading skills through deliberate practice. School education focuses more on a team approach to learning with less time spent on individual mastery.
“I see this happen with math practice consistently,” said Holbrook. “Students of all grade levels come to me unable to add even simple numbers without counting on their fingers or tapping out the sums. After practicing math, beginning at addition, they begin to master the basic functions. An understanding of the language of math comes to them, and they are able to improve their school math performance, even if they are working on a much higher level of math there.”
No. 3: Personal attention and learning. In today’s world, adds Holbrook, the written word is low on the priority list. Handwriting is given very little emphasis, and is being taken over by keyboarding. Correct spelling is left to “spellcheck.”
“An after-school program allows a student to get more feedback on individual written work. All papers are carefully graded for misspelled words, incorrect punctuation, verb tense and capitalization,” said Holbrook. “Learning to write (and speak) according to the rules of grammar is a skill that will serve a person well in life. Learning to pay attention to details, order and neatness in one’s work is also a valuable life skill.”
