Eat|See|Hear, LA’s premier outdoor movies in the park, food truck and live music event series, will be in Pasadena on Saturday, July 11, to present a 30th anniversary screening of Back to the Future. This event will be held at Centennial Square at Pasadena City Hall, located at 100 N. Garfield Avenue. Showtime is at 8:30 p.m.
Back to the Future debuted in theaters on July 3, 1985. The plot was as good as gold back then, and it still holds up today. A high school student, Marty McFly, is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a plutonium-powered DeLorean “time machine” invented by his eccentric scientist friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high school-aged parents meet and fall in love so he can save his own existence and get back to the future. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson.
“In honor of the time-traveling film’s 30th anniversary, we will have a replica of the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future on display during the evening, and it will be available for photographs, although not for an 88 m.p.h. test drive,” says Sharon Sperber, co-owner of Eat|See|Hear.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. “It’s a good idea to get there early so you can claim your spot,” Sperber suggests. “This location is concrete with some grassy areas, so you should bring pillows, cushions and blankets so you can be comfortable. Low chairs are also allowed, but please don’t block the view of the people behind you. If you want to sit on a lawn or camping-style chair that it over 6 inches off the ground, you will need to sit on the left or right side of the venue, which will be clearly marked with signs.”
The LA-based folktronic band, yOya, will take the stage at 7:30 pm. This band is the project of longtime songwriting partners Alex Pfender and Noah Dietterich. They’re a unique mix of folk-hearted songs, intricate vocal harmony, gritty synths and thundering electronic beats. With a full-length album, an EP, and several singles to their name, yOya has toured extensively through the United States, and has also made appearances at SXSW and CMJ Music Marathon. The band will release new music this summer.
As usual, plenty of food trucks will be on hand, including Angie’s Wieners, Border Grill, Brasil Kiss, Coolhaus, Cousins Maine Lobster Truck, Currywurst, India Jones, Jogasaki, Lobos, Oh My Gaga, Rice Balls of Fire, Romolo’s Italian, Say Fish Taco, Baby’s Badass Burgers, The Pudding Truck and The Urban Oven. Food trucks will be open for business at 5:30 p.m.
There are a variety of fee parking lots in the area, along with street parking. Movie-patrons can also take the Metro Gold Line to Memorial Park Station. From there, it’s just short walk to Old Town Pasadena and City Hall. “Please enter on North Marengo Avenue at Holly Street, as this is the only entrance to the event,” Sperber says.
Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance online. General admission tickets are $12 each for adults ($14 at the door), $8 for children under 12 years old, and free for children 5 and under.
“Buying your tickets in advance is the way to go, because you will automatically be entered to win a R/T flight to Auckland, courtesy of Air New Zealand,” says Sperber.
In addition to general admission tickets, a limited number of “Air New Zealand Fashionably Late” passes are available for purchase in advance at the Eventbrite website, granting seating in a reserved area, regardless of arrival time.
