Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region (HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is weighing in on a recent study that makes a correlation between laughter and memory loss.

The study was conducted by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, with the findings presented back in April. Separate groups were tested on their memory and recall ability, with one group being shown a funny 20-minute video prior to the assessment. The results saw that those who watched the funny video performed better on all aspects of the memory assessment. The study ultimately linked the increase of laughter to decreasing a hormone that induces memory loss. “With all of the medications designed to help combat ailing senior health, it’s refreshing to know that something as simple as laughter could play a practical role,” says Lester Fix, executive vice president of Home Care Assistance – Toronto/York Region. “Knowing that seniors could possibly enrich their lives this way is something that could be immediately applied to elder care methods.”

The study was conducted upon researchers discovering that the hormone cortisol negatively impacts memory in seniors. Cortisol is a hormone typically related to stress, and so the hypothesis was made that inducing laughter could possibly reduce cortisol levels and improve memory.

“Studies like these are crucial for Home Care Assistance,” Fix continues. “Knowing the impact that laughter can have on the lives of seniors is something that should be considered when carrying out elder care strategies.”

“With the results of the study showing significant cortisol decrease in those seniors who watched the funny video, being able to educate seniors about the benefit of keeping joy in their life as they age becomes an important application to wellness programs,” he concludes. “For in-home care especially, it is important to continue finding ways to enhance the lives of seniors.”
