The importance of mobile devices, link acquisition and Google Local were among the major takeaways from the recent Search Marketing Expo SMX Advanced conference, according to law firm Web marketing experts Jason Giroux and Grant Brott.

For a detailed look at the conference’s highlights, see the article, “Search Marketing Expo Offers Key Information for Law Firm Marketers,” at

Giroux, an SEO Analyst and Link Acquisition Expert, and Brott, a Local Search Marketing Specialist, attended the June event in Seattle with the goal of collecting knowledge that ultimately will enhance the services they provide to’s law firm clients.

Mission accomplished.

“We were able to gather information from those who are moving the search marketing industry forward, and that allows us to move our clients’ campaigns forward,” Brott said. “SEO is always changing, and you have to stay on top of those changes.”

Giroux and Brott attended workshops and panel discussions featuring some of the top online search marketers in the country. Their agenda included the conference’s centerpiece: A question-and-answer session with Google software engineer Matt Cutts, who emphasized the growing role of mobile in successful SEO marketing campaigns.

“Mobile has become an essential factor much sooner than expected,” Giroux said. “A remarkably high number of visits are coming from phones and tablets. It can’t be ignored.”

The other key takeaways:

  • Link acquisition – Obtaining high-quality links continues to be a significant factor in SEO, Giroux said. Using “white-hat” SEO tactics and focusing on user experience were emphasized throughout the conference.
  • Google Local – As discussed in workshops, focusing on local searches is the best way to ensure that people in your community can find information about your business (or law firm) in Google searches, according to Brott.

Additionally, Giroux and Brott noted that there was significant discussion of Microsoft Bing at the event. Because Bing is now the default search engine in many phones, tablets and gaming consoles, it can’t be overlooked in online law firm marketing campaigns, they said.
