LCD panels do not emit light on their own but need a source for illumination that is provided by backlights, powered either by LED or CCFL light sources. Earlier, LCD panels were integrated only with backlights with cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) tubes as light sources. However, the CCFL technology is fast phasing out and the LED technology, with its numerous benefits, foremost among them being higher brightness and lower power consumption, is taking over as the key light bar technology for backlighting large area displays including televisions, notebook PCs and monitors, among others. Low cost, direct-lit LED LCD TVs are fast gaining prominence over edge-lit LED LCD TVs. However, it does not translate into increased market value for LED chips and light bars used in TV applications since the direct type LED TV uses lesser LEDs when compared to edge-lit LED TVs.
Televisions currently constitute the largest end-use segment for LED light bars. Notebooks and monitors constitute the other two prominent large area display application segments. When LED LCD TVs were first introduced, the scale of manufacturing LEDs, especially for backlighting large area LCD panels, increased tremendously to meet increased demand. However, with penetration of TVs in developed markets reaching saturation levels, shipments of LEDs required for light bars is expected to decline in the coming years. The market, however, is expected to post recovery in 2015, driven by increasing penetration of LED TVs in emerging markets and accelerated TV replacement demand in developed countries. Presently, notebook PCs represent the only growth segment for LED backlighting, driven by increasing preference for high resolution next generation notebook PCs.
Developing Asian countries are expected to drive long-term growth for LED light bars. China and India hold the highest potential for all types of consumer electronic products including LED and LCD TVs. The Indian TV market is largely under-penetrated when compared to China and therefore offers more attractive opportunities for TV makers. The rapid rise in TV demand, especially LED LCD TV, from India and other emerging countries in Asia bodes well for LED TV shipments in turn benefiting panel, BLU and LED package suppliers. TV backlighting companies in China are expected to offer tough competition to LED packaging companies in Korea and Taiwan which currently dominate global backlighting LED shipments.
