Celebrating Agriculture and Nutrition at Ledyard High School
Ledyard, CT (PRWEB) September 11, 2014 -- On Saturday September 13th from 10am-2pm, Ledyard High School will celebrate the wrap up of the thirteenth annual One Book, One Region with a Farmer’s Market and a Book Signing event. The author of this year’s selection, Kristin Kimball’s The Dirty Life, will be speaking at the event and signing books. Whitsons School Nutrition will also be present offering tastings of meals prepared with Ledyard High School’s greenhouse produce.
The event is promoted by the Agri-Science department at Ledyard High School which aims to provide students the opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in areas related to agriculture and natural resources. It has been in operation for forty years and involves students from various schools from Southeastern Connecticut.
Whitsons School Nutrition has partnered with the Agri-Science department to revitalize the school greenhouse, thus allowing students to grow and harvest a variety of salad greens, vegetables and herbs in their school greenhouse throughout the year. This produce has been incorporated as part of the school lunch menu and salad bar selections. Whitsons is a strong supporter of the program and is committed to supporting local farmers by sourcing produce locally whenever seasonally available. According to Darlene McCarthy, Foodservice Director at Ledyard schools, “We are very proud to be serving these fresh foods to the students and I hope we can continue to grow the initiative more and more each year. Our goal is to provide fresh, healthier fruits and veggies, while teaching the children the importance of supporting their local community and being environmentally responsible.”
In this event, Whitsons will be offering a delicious meal consisting of marinated grilled vegetable kabobs and field greens with vinaigrette dressing. This meal will be prepared utilizing fresh greens and vegetables from the school greenhouse. Also, Jillian the Giraffe, one of Whitsons’ lovable Nutrition Safari characters, will be present at event, giving away stickers and activity sheets and promoting healthy eating.
