Fighter Pilot Takes Aim at the Role of Culture in Persistent Medical Mistakes

LifeWings Vice President and former Navy TOPGUN fighter pilot, Steve Montague, will speak on the impact of organizational culture at the Summit on Quality Healthcare in Topeka, Kansas in October. Steve will draw on lessons learned from his experience flying the F-14 Tomcat from the deck of aircraft carriers to stress the importance of the culture of safety and accountability in providing error-free healthcare.

Executive Vice President of LifeWings and former TOPGUN-trained fighter pilot, Steve “Monty” Montague, will address the Summit on Quality Healthcare in Topeka, Kansas October 18, 2013.

The Kansas Healthcare Collaborative (KHC) strives to improve the safety and quality of healthcare for all Kansans. The Summit on Quality brings together physicians, hospital leadership teams, nurses, medical groups, hospital staff and others from across Kansas to learn from experts how to improve healthcare systems and eliminate patient harming errors.

Currently a pilot for American Airlines, Captain Montague’s presentation is entitled “Why Culture Matters”.

Monty will dramatically illustrate, using stories from his aviation career spanning three decades, the importance of a safety culture in conducting error-free operations. For more than a decade, Capt. Montague has worked with physicians and hospitals around the world, coaching them through the steps of becoming highly reliable organizations. "Physicians, indeed all clinicians, provide care in an increasingly complex healthcare system. Adopting best practices from high reliability organizations like aviation, nuclear power and the U.S. military, is one of the best ways to error-proof healthcare,” says Monty. “I'm really delighted to lend my experience to this year's Summit. Everyone should be able to walk away from the presentation with a clear roadmap on how to create a culture of safety in their own organization."

A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Capt. Montague was designated a Naval Aviator in 1984 and served as a fighter pilot, flight instructor, course developer, procurement consultant, and Program Model Manager at the U.S. Navy's Landing Signal Officer School.
