As Lipitor Lawsuits Progress, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Notes Publication of New Study Linking Statins to Cataract Development
(PRWEB) December 06, 2014 -- As hundreds of Lipitor lawsuits (http://www.lipitorlawsuitcenter.com/) that allege the medication caused Type 2 diabetes move through federal court, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes the publication of a new study linking statins to the development of another serious side effect. According to a report from HealthDay News, Canadian researchers have revealed that the use of Lipitor and other statins may increase the risk for cataracts, a vision disorder that causes the lens of the eye to become cloudy.*
The study, which appears in the December issue of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, looked at more than 207,000 adults with cataracts and more than 1.1 million without them. The research team found that patients who had taken statins for a year could face as much as a 27% increased risk for cataracts compared to those who did not use the medications. According to HealthDay News, the lead author of the study said that additional clinical trials are necessary to determine if, in fact, statins can cause cataracts.
"This research just serves to remind that statins may be associated with some serious health consequences, especially in light of the litigation involving Lipitor and diabetes that is currently underway in federal court,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free and confidential case reviews to individuals who may have been harmed by Lipitor.
Lipitor Diabetes Litigation
Court documents indicate that more than 1,400 Lipitor lawsuits have been filed in a federal multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, all of which accuse Pfizer Inc. of concealing information about the drug’s association with diabetes in order to protect sales of the medication. According to court documents, plaintiffs further allege that they would not have used Lipitor, or would have been more closely monitored for diabetes, had Pfizer’s warnings been sufficient. (In re Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Litigation, MDL No. 2502)
The litigation involving Lipitor and diabetes has been growing since February 2012, when the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the labels for Lipitor and other statins would be updated to include new information about their potential association with Type 2 diabetes. The FDA announcement followed the publication of a study in JAMA: Internal Medicine the previous month which suggested that post-menopausal women treated with statins faced an increased risk of developing new-onset Type 2 diabetes. **
Type 2 diabetes patients who allegedly developed the disease due to their use of Lipitor may be able to pursue their own case against Pfizer. To learn more about filing a Lipitor lawsuit, please visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website. To arrange for a free case review, please call 800-511-5092.
