Court documents that indicate 2,079 cases have been filed in the federal Lipitor litigation were made public in a federal update issued on March 16, 2015. Plaintiffs involved in lawsuits now centralized in the U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina allege this cholesterol statin’s association with new-onset diabetes, and accuse its manufacturer, Pfizer Inc., of failing to warn about this and other serious health issues that may stem from the use of its product in order to protect sales of the drug. Lipitor Diabetes Allegations
Lipitor is a statin medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat patients with high cholesterol. The drug’s safety was called into question in February 2012, however, when the federal agency ordered all manufacturers of statin medications to adjust labeling on their products to reflect their possible association with new-onset Type 2 diabetes. This was a month after research in JAMA: Internal Medicine published findings that the disease may be more likely to develop in post-menopausal women taking Lipitor.*
The link between this medication and Type 2 diabetes has been alleged in Lipitor diabetes lawsuits now pending in the District of South Carolina, court documents indicate. Among other things, plaintiffs in these cases allege that Pfizer Inc. failed to adequately relay this association to consumers, even after officials adjusted its labeling in February 2012.
Type 2 diabetes patients who allegedly developed the disease due to their use of Lipitor may be eligible to receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.To learn more about filing a Lipitor lawsuit, please visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website.
