Living with a Disability Publishes Must-Read New Article for Social Security Disability (SSD) Beneficiaries on 2014 COLA Increase
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) December 10, 2013 -- The Editorial Board of Living with a Disability magazine, a full-color print publication that helps individuals with various disabling medical conditions live life to the fullest with timely and topical articles, advice, insights and tips, has published a must-read new article for Social Security Disability (SSD) beneficiaries on the cost of living adjustment (COLA) increase that will come into effect in 2014.
As the article highlights:
• COLA is based on a formula that looks at year-over-year increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
• The 2014 COLA will be pegged at 1.5% for disabled workers, with the average monthly payment increasing by $17 to $1,148.
• The 2014 COLA will be pegged at 1.5% for SSI recipients, with the average monthly payment increasing by $11 to $721.
“After no increase in 2011 and only a modest increase in 2012, the 2014 COLA adjustment will be good news for most SSD beneficiaries,” commented Living with a Disability’s associate publisher Joshua C. Eyestone. “And while the increase isn’t nearly as big as we feel it should be – because there are costs of living that the CPI formula doesn’t capture – it’s nevertheless good news for individuals with various disabling medical conditions, who often live on a fixed income and need all of the help they can get to maintain their purchasing power.”
The article also highlights that the SSD program continues to garner some undeserved negative attention; largely due to an October “60 Minutes” report that many informed commentators feel was markedly one-sided, and failed to portray the overall program – or the millions of honest and deserving Americans who receive benefits -- in an accurate, objective light.
“It speaks for itself that the `60 Minutes’ report failed to interview a single disabled person, or mention that the increase in SSD beneficiary rolls over the past 30 years has been driven by population growth – not by an epidemic of people trying to scam the system,” added Mr. Eyestone. “Fortunately, we know from recent surveys that about 80% of Americans support the SSD program. We encourage all Americans -- and not just those with disabling medical conditions or their family members -- to take a few minutes to write to the editor of their local newspaper, their member of Congress, and any other influential source to show their support for the SSD program. It’s not perfect, but the program does bring a life of dignity back to more than a million fellow Americans.”
