Numero Uno Web Solutions (NumeroUnoWeb.com), a fast-growing global Internet marketing firm that caters to small- and mid-sized business-to-consumer companies, comments on a recently published search ranking survey and provides its top local search tips.

“Thanks to mobile devices, every business with an online presence is just a click away. By 2015, it is expected that more local searches will come from smartphones than PCs,” says Nadia Iaboni, digital solutions manager at Numero Uno Web Solutions. “For smaller businesses that rely on local traffic, having a mobile marketing strategy is a necessity.” (Source: Boland, M., “When Will Mobile Local Searches Eclipse Desktop?” BIA/Kelsey blog, April 20, 2012; http://blog.kelseygroup.com/index.php/2012/04/20/when-will-mobile-local-searches-eclipse-desktop/.)

No longer used primarily as phones, Iaboni explains, mobile devices are the go-to tool for users looking to find and research a business and its products and services. The challenge for brands, of course, is getting mobile users to find their sites.

For smaller businesses to take advantage of this growing demographic, they need to adopt a marketing strategy that appeals to mobile device users, says Iaboni. According to a recent survey, there are a number of basic strategies brands can follow to make sure their sites are meeting the basic requirements. “When on-the-go users look for a business, they usually search by both category and location. Ensuring the brand’s location is in the title tag can help with search results and is easy to do,” Iaboni notes. “While it may sound obvious, it’s also important to make sure contact information, including name, address, and phone number, is consistent on the web site, social media sites like Facebook, and key directory and review sites. Any variance could lead to a site being penalized by search engines, hurting online ranking.”

The experts at Numero Uno Web Solutions remind business owners that while basic local search strategies can help keep businesses relevant and up-to-date, there is a vast number of advanced local search strategies that can help smaller brands rank higher on search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. It is also not uncommon for brands to use less intensive and unethical local search ranking strategies in order to boost online rankings. Unfortunately, however, failing to use search engine-friendly strategies will have the reverse effect—leading to lower rankings, says Iaboni.
