Local Construction Company Takes a Stand Against Bullying
To celebrate their 15th anniversary and promote corporate social responsibility, Westcor Construction, a local construction company, reached out to their valued trade partners and design consultants and asked them to sponsor a lemonade stand at a fundraising event. The goal is to raise $7,500 to subsidize "Dare to Care" anti-bullying programs in 15 local schools.
CALGARY, Alberta, Sept. 11, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- While it is the season of excited children returning to school, the sad fact is that many of them will be victims of bullying. Across the country, 150,000 kids miss school each day because of bullying and 23 per cent of those who are targeted, go on to develop a mental health issue.
"Only four per cent of bullying in our kids' schools is ever reported," says Lisa Dixon-Wells, the Calgarian who founded the bully prevention program "Dare to Care". Since 1999, more than 1,200 schools and youth groups across Canada have taken part in the "Dare to Care" program, which encourages bystanders to speak up when they see bullying. "Every year, we educate about 65,000 students, parents and teachers," says Dixon-Wells.
And this year, "Dare to Care" hopes to reach thousands more people in Calgary with the help of a local construction company, Westcor Construction. Westcor promotes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and to celebrate their 15th anniversary, they launched Building a Better Community: A Westcor People-First Initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to give back to the community. For the first year, Westcor is committing to 15 acts of community kindness. On September 14th, Westcor will hold a fundraiser celebration to formally kick-off their CSR initiative and have chosen "Dare to Care" as the recipient of the proceeds of the funds raised.
Playing on the idea of "taking a stand against bullying", Westcor reached out to their valued trade partners and design consultants and asked them to sponsor a lemonade stand at the fundraising event. The sponsors have been encouraged to invite their employees and associates to savor some lemonade and support the cause. The goal is to raise $7,500 to subsidize "Dare to Care" anti-bullying programs in 15 local schools.
Bob Robinson, President & CEO of Westcor Construction says, "We are proud to give back to the community that has helped shape who we are today. One of our first initiatives is taking a stand against bullying by supporting "Dare to Care."
Westcor is also holding a towel drive this month to help collect 500 bath towels for the Mustard Seed, an organization that helps people experiencing homelessness. The Mustard Seed has a critical shortage of bath towels and Westcor is joining a group of local entrepreneurs behind move forward yyc™, an initiative that's committed to building a better future for Calgary.
"Westcor's purpose is to Build a Better World," says Robinson. "The launch of this initiative reaffirms our commitment to being of service to our community and our city".
