What is the cost of beautiful hair? According to a survey conducted by a major manufacturer of hair care products, the average British woman spends about £27,722.52 (about $42,000) on her hair throughout her lifetime. This is not a small number but justifiable by the fact that more and more women regard their hair as their crowning glory. For Lola Akingbola, author of 8 Weeks to Longer Hair!: A Guide for the Afro-Caribbean Woman, hair care is more than just buying products or services; it became a personal statement, her way of embracing her natural Nigerian kinks and curls and declaring to others that curly hair can be just as healthy, strong and long as other hair types.
Akingbola describes herself as a “born and raised” Nigerian woman who has “lived twenty-odd years without knowing what her natural texture was.” She has always wanted to have longer locks but had no idea how to make it happen with her kinky and curly hair. Finally, in 2008, she started seriously researching about black hair care. This endeavor has extended to a personal blog devoted to chronicling her journey toward healthy and longer hair, her unique regimen and the products she finds effective. Currently, she is working on her own line of hair care products designed especially for African hair.
The time and effort Akingbola spent made her realize that learning about one’s hair (especially Afro-Caribbean hair) and setting hair goals is no small task. With 8 Weeks to Longer Hair!, she hopes to guide readers in the first steps of their hair journey. In it, she shares tips and techniques which she herself has tried and tested and dispels myths and fallacies about hair care.
“Many people have asked me questions in person and on my blog and it seems like there is never enough time to tell them everything. This book lays out steps in an easy to follow manner… It is about building a daily and weekly plan for achieving your hair goals,” the author says.
A must-have hair care manual, 8 Weeks to Longer Hair! is ultimately about empowering readers to love, appreciate and make the most of what they naturally have.
