West Allis Dentist Sees the Importance of Taking Advantage of the Holiday Season to Improve Literacy
West Allis, WI (PRWEB) November 08, 2013 -- Dr. Jim Fakler D.D.S., owner of Fakler Family Dentistry, whose offices are located in West Allis, Wisconsin, has long been a supporter of literacy and activities which encourage reading. One activity he has recently adopted as a means of encouraging literacy is the USMC holiday program, Toys for Tots.
Long known for its humanitarian purpose to provide Holiday gifts for underprivileged youth, an equally important goal for Toys for Tots is to provide books as part of its literacy program. Oftentimes, the books received will be the only books in that home. Fakler stated, “Being a reader myself, I am fully aware of the importance of our youth learning to read."
He continued, “Readers are only readers because they had an opportunity to read a book that touched their heart, like only a really good book can. Every reader remembers the first story that they read. It shaped them, it changed them, it inspired them to read more.”
The books he particularly prefers to give are Stories from the Golden Age, a line of adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy and western stories written by L. Ron Hubbard during the 1930s and 40s. Providing high interest books, loaded with action and which have a moralistic undertone—where it is important to do the right thing, is important he feels. Again in his own words, “By giving the youth in my community Mr. Hubbard's fiction through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, Boys Scouts Program and School Literacy Program, as I have done, they are getting the chance to fall in love with a book.”
