Harlingen Dentist Recognizes the Importance of Taking Advantage of the Holiday Season to Improve Literacy
Harlingen, TX (PRWEB) November 15, 2013 -- Dr. Juan D. Villarreal, owner and dentist of Harlingen Family Dentistry, whose office is located in Harlingen, Texas, has long been a supporter of literacy and activities which encourage reading. One activity he has recently adopted as a means of encouraging literacy is the USMC holiday program, Toys for Tots, who will begin delivering Dr. Villarreal’s contribution to deserving children at the end of this month.
Long known for its humanitarian purpose to provide Holiday gifts for underprivileged youth, an equally important goal for Toys for Tots is to provide books as part of its literacy program. Oftentimes, the books received will be the only books in that home. Dr. Villarreal stated, “I support the Toys for Tots Literacy Program because the youth are our future. Yet, with the youth literacy rate as low as it is, we are not looking at a very bright future."
The books he particularly prefers to give are Stories from the Golden Age, a line of adventure, mystery, science fiction, fantasy and western stories written by L. Ron Hubbard during the 1930s and 40s. Providing high interest books, loaded with action and which have a moralistic undertone—where it is important to do the right thing, is important he feels. “The young men and women of tomorrow, our future leaders, will be as good as they can read, learn from history's lessons and know their human rights.”
Dr. Villarreal earlier sent editions of Stories from the Golden Age into middle schools and high schools throughout Texas. He saw the value of such activities when one of the students from McAllen, Texas wrote, “The story shows that people can follow their dreams no matter what their size is, and that their size really doesn’t matter.”
