65th Annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival To Be Held This June
Mackinac Island, MI (PRWEB) May 20, 2014 -- The Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau is proud to present the 65th Annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival, June 6-15. This festival is held on Mackinac Island and includes a wide variety of activities perfect for the whole family.
What was once a one-day festival has blossomed into a 10-day event, bringing lilac lovers and interested tourists from all over the state of Michigan and the country to partake in a variety of outdoor activities. The festival attracts participants from a range of backgrounds, from experienced botanists and gardening enthusiasts to visitors touring the island.
For example, visitors can explore the island and learn how to care for a garden during a "walk and talk" with lilac expert Jeff Young, a University of Vermont master gardener and board member of the International Lilac Society. Adults can participate in the many beer and wine tastings available, or enjoy live music, films, or performance art.
As part of the festival, a blessing of the animals will be held Friday, June 13, presented by Mackinac Island Carriage Tours and the Mackinac Island Dog & Pony Club. At the end of the festival, on Sunday June 15, the Lilac Festival Grand Parade presented by Coca Cola will be held, led by the family descendants of Chief Mackinac, along with descendants of Chief Pontiac and Chief Okemos.
“The festival is so rich in tradition,” said Alison Silk, Assistant Director of the Mackinac Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It’s the perfect way to teach your kids about the history of the area in a fun, exciting way. No matter what age you are, there is something for absolutely everyone to enjoy.”
