According to court documents, a Florida woman’s routine robotic surgery at Orange Park Medical Center allegedly led to a series of events that left her with a mouthful of blow fly maggots and ultimately ended in her death.
The case number is 102016CA000690A001 and the court of record is the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. The case is styled, Mooneyham v. Orange Park Medical Center, Inc.
According to court records, Dorothy Mooneyham, age 76, allegedly entered Orange Park Medical Center on November 13, 2015 to undergo a surgical procedure.
Court documents state that Mooneyham allegedly remained at Orange Park Medical Center until December 11, 2015. Court documents state that, during the course of her treatment, hospital staff allegedly allowed her mouth and parts of her body to become infested with maggots.
Court documents also state that the hospital and its staff had a duty of care to provide the woman with oral care, bathing, and other hygienic services to prevent a maggot infestation.
Court documents state that Mooneyham allegedly developed respiratory difficulties after the surgery. According to the legal complaint, she allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest on November 25, which prompted hospital staff to transfer her to the hospital’s intensive care unit, where she was intubated.
The complaint also states the hospital and its staff allegedly failed to remove the maggots and left the woman in a slumped over position that made it difficult for her to breathe.
Court documents go on to state that, days after the intubation in the ICU, hospital staff allegedly discovered maggots crawling from Mooneyham’s mouth. Court documents go on to state that the hospital and its staff allegedly also found maggots on other parts of Mooneyham’s body.
Mooneyham’s family is being represented by attorneys Frank Ashton and Marc Hardesty of Hardesty, Tyde, Green & Ashton, P.A. in a medical negligence and elder abuse action against Orange Park Medical Center and its parent company, Hospital Corporation of America.
