Attorney Bruce Campbell, founder of Campbell & Associates Law Firm PC, recently spoke to a group of young lawyers during a seminar entitled “Malpractice insurance issues that they did not teach you in law school” at the UNT Dallas College of Law. “I was asked to speak by the chairman of the Dallas Young Lawyers Section of the Dallas Bar, and readily agreed as it was a great honor and privilege to further educate these young lawyers on this very important issue,” said Campbell, who is regularly consulted as an expert witness on legal malpractice issues and regularly retained to defend lawyers on malpractice and disciplinary issues.

During the seminar, Campbell, who has been defending and advising lawyers accused of malpractice and professional misconduct for over twenty years, addressed issues that need to be considered by young lawyers in applying for malpractice insurance and the issues that they need to be aware of in reporting potential and actual claims and/or grievances to their carrier. He also discussed proven ways to reduce exposure for claims and grievances as well as money issues that frequently get lawyers into serious trouble.

“For at least the last five years the trend has been law schools churning out more young lawyers than there are jobs with existing firms,” said Campbell. “The result is an ever increasing number of young lawyers who find that if they want to practice law after spending oftentimes well over $100,000 to go to law school, they have to ‘hang out their own shingle.’”

In an effort to mollify this problem, the Dallas Young Lawyers Section created a young lawyer summit. The summit is designed to help young lawyers by making them aware of the many practical problems that arise for attorneys who own their own firm.
