Celebrating Martha and Mary’s Amazing Resident Centenarians
Poulsbo, WA (PRWEB) August 07, 2014 -- One hundred years ago, World War 1 broke out and the Panama Canal opened after ten years of construction. Woodrow Wilson was president, Congress established the Federal Trade Commission, and Cleveland installed the nation’s first red and green stoplights and a U.S. stamp cost only 2 cents. And in 1914, Martha and Mary of Poulsbo residents Mary Schoolmaster and Leontina Archuleta were born.
Mary Bisogno (Schoolmaster) was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 6, 1914. Her family, including her 5 brothers and 2 sisters, lived in Brooklyn until Mary was 13, when the family moved to New Jersey so that her father could open up a barbershop. Mary worked hard all of her life and raised 2 daughters to which, Mary often remarks that they are “perfect," and credits her daughters and working hard for her amazing and fulfilled long life. Mary has 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 6 great, great grandchildren with another yet on the way. She also has numerous nieces and nephews to which she is very close.
Mary loved working and at a young age persuaded the owner of a factory to allow her, although underage, to work as a seamstress. At age 65, Mary started her own business taking care of children and the homes of the families for which she was working. She piled her Dodge Dart with toys and stuffed animals to share with them and others as she had a reputation of being Auntie Meme Cakes to so many.
To celebrate Mary’s 100 years, her family along with the staff and volunteers at Martha and Mary, are hosting a Bingo Birthday Celebration on August 8th at 2:00 pm. Mary loves to play Bingo and her daughter and son in law often visit and take Mary for a day to play. At 100 years old, this charismatic woman, also known as Nana Banana, Mary Poppins, and Aunt Meme Cakes is amazing and has zest for life that lights up a room. Mary is looking forward to spending more time with her family and was thrilled to share that she has a post on Facebook! Mary has been a resident of Martha & Mary’s since 2012.
Leontina Lucero (Archuleta) was born on December 10, 1914 in Los Pinos, New Mexico, a town that only lives on in history books and memories. One of the founding families of Los Pinos, Miss Archuleta’s great grandfather received a land grant from Spain in the 1700s and it is this property that Leontina remembers fondly as a place that shaped her life, and the adventures she shares of living on the ranch are captivating. As the oldest of three girls, she was expected to help out on the family ranch and only attended school through the third grade. Nevertheless, Leontina taught herself to read and write in both English and Spanish.
Leontina married Benito Archuleta on April 6, 1931 and helped support the family while working as a waitress. Eventually, she and Benito moved to Lahera then to Alamosa, both in Colorado, where they raised four children. The two middle children, both girls, eventually married and moved to Renton and Belfair. As she grew older, Leontina decided to join her daughters in the Pacific Northwest; she has been a resident of Martha & Mary since 2003.
Miss Archuleta loves embroidery, crochet, and gardening, but her best skills and favorite activities all took place in the kitchen. Her family often reminisces that she baked great pies, cookies, and cakes. And that her homemade tortillas were better than any others, anywhere. For such a great scratch cook, it might surprise some people to know that, Leontina’s favorite food - Kentucky Fried Chicken, and visitors better not arrive empty handed.
Leontina also loves the Seattle Seahawks and is looking forward to watching them this season with her grandson, family, and friends. This lovely lady of nearly 100 has a large, close-knit family that remains involved in one another’s lives. On August 16th, when the family gathers to celebrate Leontina’s 100 years of life, more than 50 adults and 10 children will be there to share her milestone. The event will be held at the Chapel at Martha & Mary.
