Recorded Books Presents Bestselling Author Mary Monroe at 8th National Conference of African American Librarians
Prince Frederick, MD (PRWEB) September 03, 2013 -- Recorded Books, LLC, the world’s largest independent producer of unabridged audiobooks and a Haights Cross Communications company, was honored to host New York Times and Essence bestselling author Mary Monroe at the 8th National Conference of African American Librarians held last month at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.
Mary Monroe was a featured speaker August 9, fielding questions and signing books for her fans. Her appearance kicked off a day of NCAAL events that included library-based workshops focusing on topics ranging from health and wellness to advocacy and community outreach.
The child of Alabama sharecroppers and the first member of her family to finish high school, Monroe is a self-taught, award-winning novelist and has been a storyteller since childhood. Encouraged to pursue a career in writing by such critically acclaimed authors as Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and Ann Rice, Monroe penned the New York Times bestselling novel God Don’t Play, which garnered a PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles National Literary Award.
Monroe is a longtime fixture on Recorded Books’ Griot Audio imprint, the oldest and largest catalog of audiobooks dedicated solely to African-American fiction. Attending the conference to promote The Lost Daughters, the latest in her Mama Ruby series, she also spoke about the experiences that inspired many of her books, including the modern classic God Don’t Like Ugly.
“I can't thank (everyone) enough for making my trip so enjoyable!” Monroe said, “I called up my publicist and told her what an awesome time I had.”
“We appreciate the support of Recorded Books at our annual conference and their commitment to make African-American literature available to a wider audience through their Griot imprint,” said Kelvin Watson, Vice President/President Elect Black Caucus of the American Library Association.
