In 2014, author Mary McGuinness published “Mary’s Prayer,” a memoir which charted her journey to health through prayer and music following a lengthy period of illness from depression. In “The Meaning of Contentment” (published by Balboa Press), McGuinness follows up with a book that reflects on how some people one meets in life can inadvertently transform and afford one a stronger identity. The book is available for purchase at: https://www.amazon.com/Meaning-Contentment-Mary-Mcguinness/dp/1982216670/.

In the memoir, McGuinness shares the story of how a meeting with her Uncle John changed the course of her life. “The Meaning of Contentment” tells how she strengthened both her identity and the familial bond while helping him. It focuses on the friendship and the interactive learning experience that dramatically impacted on her future. The author also meditates on how she attained contentment through her faith.

“In an aging society, many people are involved in the care of elderly relatives,” says McGuinness. “Most stories recently about the elderly have been about people with dementia or Alzheimer’s, this story is refreshing in the sense that the autobiographical memories of my uncle were vivid and contributed to filling in the gaps in our personal family history.”
