According to Chhoda, Medicare contains four levels of coverage, Parts A, B, C and D, each of which provides different types of benefits. Some portions are mandatory, while others are voluntary or optional. Medicare is the most predictable payer with which to work, and the program makes every effort to provide clinicians with the information they need to participate. Clinicians that do the following get paid the quickest.
1. Make sure to complete a registration form to be a Medicare approved provider and be accepted;
2. Receive a Provider Transaction Access Number that will be used on all medical or physical therapy billing;
3. Validate client’s coverage prior to the patient encounter and get a pre-authorization or referral if necessary;
4. Certify that the procedure or treatment is medically necessary;
5. Obtain an advance beneficiary notice if a service needs to be performed that Medicare doesn’t consider being medically necessary;
6. Submit claims electronically. Make sure to observe and follow Medicare filing deadlines;
7. Accept payments according to the Medicare fee schedule;
8. Respect all HIPAA regulations
