Birmingham, AL Law Firm Barclay Law LLC, Comments on Report about Blood-Thinning Drug Xarelto
Birmingham, AL (PRWEB) August 28, 2014 -- Blood-thinning prescription medication Xarelto has been linked to adverse side effects, according to several recent news articles, a serious issue that raises concerns among people who take this powerful drug, according to Birmingham, Alabama dangerous drug attorney John Michael Barclay of Barclay Law LLC, who urges people injured by Xarelto to discuss their legal options with an experienced lawyer.
Barclay based his comments on several articles and studies detailing the drug’s potentially harmful side effects, including an article published by DrugWatch.(“First Xarelto Bleeding Lawsuits Filed; FDA Rejects New Use,” Aug. 4, 2014)
“Barclay Law is currently considering cases on behalf of those injured, or whose loved ones died, allegedly as a result of taking Xarelto,” Barclay said today. “Although powerful drugs like Xarelto are required to go through rigorous testing before being released to the market, sometimes these drugs do more harm than good.”
According to DrugWatch, numerous lawsuits have been filed against Bayer AG, which manufactures Xarelto, and its United States distributor, Johnson & Johnson, after multiple patients experienced severe internal bleeding. Unlike similar blood-thinning medications within the same drug class (anticoagulants), Xarelto does not have an antidote to stop uncontrolled and potentially fatal internal bleeding, according to DrugWatch.
Due to the risks associated with Xarelto, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changed its boxed label warning on Xarelto in March 2014. According to the FDA, potential Xarelto side effects include uncontrollable bleeding. Furthermore, the FDA reports that no antidote currently exists to reverse potentially serious side effects associated with the drug.
The Institute of Safe Medication Practices (“Quarter Watch: Monitoring FDA MedWatch Reports: Perspective on Drug Hyper Sensitivity: Executive Summary,” May 7, 2014) reported that during the first quarter of 2013, adverse event reports involving Xarelto (680) surpassed that of Pradaxa (528), which ranked as the number one anticoagulant drug for adverse events in 2012.
Such risks must be taken seriously by consumers and further investigated by researchers, according to Barclay, lead attorney at Birmingham law firm Barclay Law, LLC.
“Drug manufacturers have a moral and legal obligation to adequately test products for safety before releasing them to the market,” Barclay said. “We understand this is not always the case. We also understand that it can be difficult knowing what to do after suffering adverse effects from a dangerous drug. You might think drug manufacturers will cover the true cost of your injuries, including medical bills and lost wages from missing work. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. You might be entitled to more compensation than drug manufacturers and their insurance companies want to pay you. If you’ve been injured or a loved one died, you have rights. We strongly urge you to contact us immediately and discuss your legal options.”
