In Vietnam-era Idaho, devout football coach Ben Steinbrecher juggles raising his disabled son, managing his crumbling marriage and leading a collegiate football team in the new book by Mel Reisner, “The Leather Man” (published by Archway Publishing).

Ben, dubbed “the Leather Man” by one of his players, had a career-ending knee injury in college – the first in a series of setbacks for him. His frustrations with his current and past situations come to a head while his coaching career blossoms, testing his emotional and mental endurance in the process.

Reisner describes his narrative as one of temptations, trials and redemption for the main character, as well as an entertaining take on collegiate sports.

“The Leather Man” introduces multiple characters with equally intriguing backgrounds, such as Cajun superstar Quintus LeClaire, whose Vietnam War flashbacks land him in custody of the Canyon City police. Quintus brings a human side to the effects of war and relays an inspiring message for readers due to his potential as a player on the Canyon State College team.

Reisner hopes “The Leather Man” will entertain, educate and spur emotional responses from readers while exposing the ins and outs of collegiate coaching.
