Princeview Dental (PrinceviewDental.com), one of Etobicoke's premier dental clinics, is giving its expert opinion on the best ways to cure halitosis and encourage a healthy mouth, including dealing with bad breath caused by the tonsils.

“Bad breath is a problem for about 40% of adults,” says Dr. Janice Mummery, founder of Princeview Dental. “It’s difficult for people to self-assess whether or not they actually have bad breath, so it’s important for everyone to take preventative measures, including brushing one’s teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and making regular visits to the dentist for a cleaning. People should also brush their tongues and not overuse mouthwash; that’s because the tongue accumulates bacteria that need to be cleaned just as much as teeth do.” (Source: Stork, T., “How to eliminate bad breath,” Canadian Living web site; http://www.canadianliving.com/health/prevention/how_to_eliminate_bad_breath.php, last accessed May 16, 2014.)

Dr. Mummery explains that there are causes of bad breath where regular brushing and flossing just aren’t enough to eliminate the problem. One potential factor is tonsil stones, which build up in the tonsils and can ignite halitosis. In cases where nothing else has worked and halitosis persists, then removing the tonsils may be the best option to eliminating bad breath. “Other methods have been suggested for cleaning the tonsils, including gargling salt water or using a cotton swab to dislodge the stones, but these are only temporary solutions,” Dr. Mummery adds. “Not only are these only temporary means of combating bad breath, but attempting to dislodge tonsil stones can be dangerous and invite more bacteria into the area.” (Source: Hannah “Dealing With Bad Breath Due to Tonsil Stones,” Family Friendly Search web site, January 22, 2014; http://familyfriendlysearch.com/dealing-with-bad-breath-due-to-tonsil-stones/.)

“It’s always best to seek advice from a dental surgeon before attempting any procedure to fight halitosis,” Dr. Mummery concludes. “Princeview Dental is a reputable dental clinic and can provide sound advice on the proper practices for a healthy mouth.”
