Regulated in the Province of Ontario by the Law Society of Upper Canada, the paralegal profession has boomed in recent years, and Metro College of Technology is one of few authorized paralegal training colleges in Ontario.
The Metro College Paralegal Program provides students with legal training, the substantive and procedural knowledge essential to modern legal service environments, and the practical skills required to read, understand and interpret legislation when providing legal services to the public. Major components of the Paralegal Program include:
- Administrative Law
- Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Employment and Labour Law
- Ethics and Professional Responsibility
- Evidence and the Litigation Process
- Immigration and Refugee Law
- Legal Accounting and Practice Management
- Legal Research and Communication
- Provincial Offences/Motor Vehicle Offences

- Tribunal Practice and Procedure
Over the course of 1 year students gain hands on experience with various types of legislation, legal procedures, and develop advocacy skills. Paralegal students are also required to complete an internship where the training and skills learned in the classroom can be applied to real-world settings. Upon completion of the paralegal program, students are thoroughly prepared to take the Law Society of Upper Canada licensing exam and begin to provide legal advice, representation and consultation in specific areas of law.
Graduates of the 1 year Metro College Paralegal program find employment in law firms, legal institutions, government agencies, and legal departments in medium and large businesses. Graduates with entrepreneurial aspirations can start a paralegal business and provide legal services to the public.
