The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee today announced the creation of a Risk Assessment Subcommittee that will work closely with the National Football League (NFL), local law enforcement and a federal team to take all necessary precautions in preparing for the biggest event in U.S. sports.
The Super Bowl is designated a national special security (SEAR 1) event by the government. Together, all the entities prepare to address and handle a wide-range of risk, such as power outages, facility safety problems, security breaches, weather-related issues, among many others.
“While a Super Bowl presents many unique risks, we recognize that the event is similar in many respects, to any other large event. Although one could argue that South Florida is accustomed to hosting events of this scale, it would be naïve to think Super Bowl LIV will be business as usual,” said Rodney Barreto, Miami Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman. “The security and logistical landscapes have changed and therefore our record-breaking 11th Super Bowl will require the efforts of thousands to ensure the festivities go off without a hitch.”
The Risk Assessment Subcommittee will be led by Ignacio Borbolla, a decorated insurance agent for Allstate and active South Florida community advocate and leader. Joining Borbolla, attorney Bruce Marx a partner with Marlow, Connell, Valerius, Abrams, Adler, Newman & Lewis and former Chief of Police for the Miami Beach Police Department and current Chief of Security for Ultra Music Festival, Raymond Martinez.
Based on Minnesota and Atlanta, the Miami Super Bowl Host Committee expects up to several hundred thousand visitors during the 10 days of bowl festivities, including many from out of state as well as from other countries.
“One variable that the risk assessment team won’t have to worry about is the weather,” added Barreto. “In years past, when the game is hosted in a cold city, there are concerns about how to safely move people indoors quickly. In our case, it might just be the opposite.”
Ultimately, the main goal for the subcommittee is for fans to enjoy the Super Bowl festivities and not have to worry about their personal safety.
