New York, New York (PRWEB) July 28, 2014
Mirena IUD lawsuits (http://www.drugbot.com/mirena-iud/lawsuit/) that allege the long-acting birth control device caused some users to suffer serious injuries after it spontaneously migrated from its proper position in the uterus continue to mount in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to a new case list issued last month in New Jersey, at least 924 Mirena lawsuits involving such allegations are pending in a multicounty litigation underway in Bergen County Superior Court. Some 148 claims have been filed in the proceeding since the Court issued a previous case list on July 8th, which recorded 776 filings. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297)
“Our Firm is representing numerous Mirena lawsuit clients in the New Jersey litigation, and we continue to receive inquiries from women who were allegedly injured by this IUD on a regular basis. We are not surprised that the number of filings now exceeds 900,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free Mirena lawsuit evaluations to women who were seriously harmed, allegedly due to spontaneous migration of the IUD.
The Mirena IUD is a long-acting contraceptive device that was first approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000. It is inserted directly into the uterus by a healthcare provider, where it releases a synthetic progesterone for up to five years. In 2009, its approved uses were expanded to include the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who wish to use an IUD for birth control. In December 2009, the FDA also issued a warning letter to Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals after finding that one of its Mirena promotions overstated the IUD’s benefits and downplayed its risks.
According to court documents, all of the Mirena IUD lawsuits pending in the New Jersey litigation allege that the device spontaneously migrated from its proper position in the uterus, despite having been correctly implanted by a healthcare professional. Plaintiffs claim that this occurrence led to a number of serious Mirena complications, including uterine perforations, scarring, adhesions and infertility, which in many cases required emergency treatment and surgical intervention.
Court records indicate that in addition to the claims pending in New Jersey, an additional 612 Mirena lawsuits involving similar allegations have been filed in a federal multicounty litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434)
Alleged victims of serious Mirena complications related to spontaneous IUD migration may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and more.
