As Mirena lawsuits (http://www.mirenalawsuit2014.com/) continue to mount in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes new research which suggests that women who use an IUD may face an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). According to HCPLive.com, the study, which was presented this week at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting in Boston, looked at 976 women who had not been diagnosed with RA, but who were at increased risk for the disease because they had a first-degree relative with RA. They were each given a blood test to determine levels of RA-related antibodies. In addition, the women were questioned about prior contraceptive use and pregnancy.*

The authors of the study found that women who had used an IUD had higher levels of RA-related antibodies in their blood compared to those who used oral contraceptives. The HCPLive report noted that women have long been thought to be at higher risk for RA than men, in part due to hormonal factors which may be impacted by their choice of contraception.

“Our Firm is representing numerous women who were allegedly harmed by the Mirena IUD. This study just serves to remind that IUDs may be associated with some significant risks,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free case evaluations to women who were allegedly harmed after their Mirena IUD spontaneously migrated from its proper position in the uterus.

Mirena IUD Lawsuits
The Mirena IUD is a long-acting contraceptive that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider, where it emits a low dose of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin, for up to five years. Mirena was first cleared for sale by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000 as a method of birth control. In 2009, the agency expanded Mirena’s approved uses to include the prevention of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who wish to use an IUD as their primary method of birth control.** That same year, the FDA issued a Warning Letter to Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals after finding that one of the company’s Mirena promotions made misleading claims about the safety and efficacy of the IUD.

Court records indicate that thousands of women have filed Mirena IUD lawsuits for serious complications allegedly caused by spontaneous migration of the device. More than 1,200 such claims are now pending in a multicounty litigation established in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court, where Bernstein Liebhard LLP is currently filing cases. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297) More than 1,000 additional lawsuits have also been filed in a federal multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434)

Women who were allegedly harmed by the Mirena IUD may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
