Mirena IUD Lawsuit News: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Notes New Study Suggesting Association Between Levonorgestrel-Releasing IUDs and Increased Breast Cancer Risk
New York, New York (PRWEB) July 09, 2014 -- As Mirena IUD lawsuits (http://www.themirenalawsuitcenter.com/) continue to mount in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes the publication of a new study that suggests a link between levonorgestrel-releasing IUDs and an increased risk of breast cancer. The study, which was published online July 7th by Obstetrics and Gynecology, followed more than 93,000 Finnish women between the ages of 30 and 49 who had used a levonorgestrel IUD to regulate heavy periods between 1994 and 2007. Among other things, the study found that the number of diagnosed new breast cancer cases was 19% higher among women who used such an IUD compared to the general population.*
“Our Firm is representing numerous women who allegedly suffered uterine perforations and other serious Mirena complications due to spontaneous migration of the IUD. This study is a reminder that women considering a levonorgestrel IUD like Mirena should carefully weigh its benefits against its potential risks,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free case evaluations to women who allegedly suffered serious Mirena complications including spontaneous migration of their IUD.

The Mirena IUD is a long-acting method of birth control that is inserted directly into the uterus, where it emits levonorgestrel, a synthetic form of progesterone, for up to five years. Mirena was first approved as a contraceptive by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000, which went on to expand its approved uses in 2009 to include treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who wish to use an IUD for birth control. That same year, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals was cited by the FDA for a marketing campaign that the agency said exaggerated the IUD's benefits and downplayed the risk of serious Mirena complications.
According to court documents, at least 776 Mirena IUD lawsuits have been filed in New Jersey’s Bergen County Superior Court on behalf of women who were allegedly injured due to spontaneous migration of the IUD. Among other things, plaintiffs claim that the labeling for Mirena only notes that the device may migrate if the uterus is perforated upon insertion. It does not mention that the Mirena IUD may migrate long after it was correctly inserted by a doctor. The lawsuits further claim that victims of Mirena migration have suffered a number of serious injuries, including uterine perforations, scarring, infections, and infertility. (In Re: Mirena Litigation; Case No. 297)
In addition to the clams pending in New Jersey, court records indicate that more than 560 Mirena lawsuits involving similar allegations are pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York. (In re: Mirena IUD Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2434.)
Alleged victims of spontaneous migration of a Mirena IUD may be entitled to file their own Mirena lawsuit.
